Jan Thiel was a salt plantation, ideally located between the salt flats and Caracas Bay.

Indigo was also grown on the estate. The leaves of this crop were soaked in stone containers – they are still there – to make the famous deep blue dye.

In earlier times, the grounds of Plantation Jan Thiel ran all the way to the shoreline. This beach location still exists and today is one of Curaçao’s most popular tourist attractions.
